Two fighter squadrons (145 and 602) were based here during the Battle of Britain. Later in the war, the USAAF also used the field. It became a civilian airfield after the war.</p> <p>Since the late 1940s, a motor racing track, the "Goodwin Circuit", has run around the airport perimeter.</p>
