That's good news about the fee. Sault Ste. Marie (CYAM) abandoned its landing fee for small aircraft a couple of years ago, and I think traffic has increased as a result.

As of September 12, 2007 it seems that the County of Athabasca is no longer charging the landing fee for privately registered aircraft.

There is a landing fee of $10 (ten dollars) here. But parking is free and the 100LL is sold at a reasonable rate.

This airport is running at 8 times planned capacity because of the oil boom. There's a new terminal and new runway planned, among other changes:

With all of the expansion going on north of this airport it's amazing how desolate it is. Still has a cute terminal and small town feel with capacity for real air traffic.

They don't call it the windy city for nothing! One of the few places you could land a Cessna in reverse ;)

Used to fly out of here on Time Air's Dash 7's and Dash 8's in the early 80's. Was a great time to fly.

I would have loved to do my initial training here but alas it's too far from Ottawa! :)

Critics are calling for a review of Canada's temporary foreign worker program, after two Chinese workers died when a roof collapsed in northern Alberta.

"I heard a big snap, and that was the cable," witness Brett Taylor, a boilmaker apprentice, told CTV Edmonton.

"I looked over and could see the whole entire things just twist and the roof pulled out and slammed right down on top of everybody."

The accident happened on an oilsands construction site about 70 kilometres north of Fort McMurray.

The workers were building a large oil container as part of Canadian Natural Resources Ltd.'s $10.8-billion Horizon project.

The company has since confirmed the two killed workers were Chinese employees, and four others injured in the same incident were also from China. "

Best food and friendliest service I have ever found at an airport, it is in the 'A' Hangar, 1st hanger north of the terminal. Get the "D" cups!

Windy as hell. Make sure to tighten up your ball cap before getting out of the plane or you will loose it. Dress in layers so the wind doesn't blow your shirt tight. Everyone can see your nipples.

I crossed the border at Coutts Alberta (CEP4) in July 06. There is a little grass runway that runs East-West right along the border, the US side of the border is Sweetgrass Montana (K7S8). The highway border crossing is only 100 yards away, so the agent just walks over, like at Piney in Manitoba. I think THY was parked with the tailwheel in Canada and the front tires in the US. The border runs along the side of the runway.

There are several little air strips like this between Chilliwack BC and Piney in Manitoba. Because they are only yards from a customs office, they only require one hour advance notice (to avoid that $5000US fine). Check the AOPA International Operations website or the AOPA Airport Guide for the latest advance notice requirements for the specific airport.

When I phoned to give my one-hour notice, the US Customs agent asked me to confirm I was flying a taildragger and suggested I should not land here if it was wet, since it can be very rough.
