Comment by @david on Duncan Airport, Canada:

I've never been to Duncan Airport, so I'm not sure about the situation, but at most airports there's something called a "circuit" that aircraft follow. Generally speaking, it's a rectangle about 3 km long and 1 km wide, with the runway in the middle of one of the long sides (and it can flip locations depending on the wind direction). At an airport without a control tower (that's most airports), everybody flies the same circuit for the sake of safety. They'll be at about 1,000 ft above ground level on the long side that doesn't have the runway (what we call the "downwind" side). It's important that everyone use the same circuit to avoid the risk of midair collisions, and to provide an orderly way for multiple aircraft to approach the airport and land (it's sort-of the flying equivalent of a four-way stop, where there's no light, but all the drivers know and follow the same rules).

So if you live under the circuit, unfortunately, there will be many aircraft flying repeatedly at 1,000 ft above your house on days when the wind favours the corresponding runway. That information is public (there are even often different zoning regulations near an airport), but most realtors either suppress it or outright lie about it to make house sales, then any home owners who don't like airport operations are left feeling angry and duped once the realtor has run off with the sales commission.

Endless circling of large low flying helicopters is not fair to the neighbors. I understand that they need hours mechanically etc, but have them fly in larger darn circles!

Warm, clean, lots of space and the view to the kill of Desolation sound. THE HOSPITALITY is first class bar none!!!! Great folks laid out Dianne's fresh baking and cheese and cold cuts and tea.... and begged us to stay. AND I even left with a bottle of Jam from Diane's personal creation made from Salal berries she harvested there. Incredible place. It is now for sale!

Avoid Landmark (Shell) at all costs, outrageous ramp fee ($80 plus HST) for a C182 and when my passenger needed to go to the terminal, everyone was too busy to take him there in their van, they did phone for a cab though. Use Millionair, they know what service is.

I was always fascinated by this forgotten piece of Caribou history. It would be cool if a group of people could be granted permission to restore the runways and use it as a recreational fly-in site for light aircraft and ultra-lites etc. Someone with good writing talents and enough info could print a small booklet on it's history and maybe use the sales to help fund restoration. Just a thought.Safe flying.

I lived on this airport as a kid - would have been in the early to mid 50's - there was about 8 to 10 families there at that time. My father was a radio operator there, and i went to school up to grade 3 in the 1 room school.

Comment by @david on Vancouver International Airport, Canada:

I know it can be rough for residents, but in most cases, the airports were there first and the cities have grown out and around them, so the people who buy the houses or sign the leases do so knowing that there's an airport nearby.

Of course, that assumes that real-estate agents are honest — I know one couple who bought a house right under the approach to CYYZ 24L, after being assured by their slimy agent that the airport used the runway only for emergencies (I guess the definition of "emergency" is "when the wind is blowing from the southwest"). It was cool for their kids watching the planes passing low over the park playground, though.

YVR's website indicates that international airports are 24 hour operations in Canada. However if you look at Toronto's departure schedule, you will see that traffic generally stops at 1:30am and resumes at 6:00am In Vancouver we have flights leaving up to and including 3 am with only a three hour lull to 6 am. Our airport is smack dab in the heart of our cities. Convenient but not for sleep.

Great facility. Wish I had more time to enjoy the beautiful setting. Next time I will plan to spend at least two nights. Just proves that a user-friendly airport does not have to be attended. We were on a flight from Yellowknife to Nanaimo. The self-serve fuel was greatly appeciated and saved us from another landing for fuel. Definitely a 10 plus in my book.
