It is amazing that the workout for the upgradation of Faisalabad Airport is still in paper works. Nore the businessmen or the government is interested. They sit together on a round table, drink tea and eat snacks, and then go home. Practically, their performance is nil. It was some six months ago when the commissioner was so eager to call a meeting in four days on the issue, but no result came out until now. We can pray to Allah to give them the wisdom.

Best wishes to those who love Faisalabad.

The business community has asked the Government to start international flights from Faisalabad – the Third largest city of the country and home to the highest number of textile producing units.

Detail>

The total textile exports of $12 billion, the city is contributing more than $4 billion, but the businessmen say they lack the facility of international flights.

“Textile being lifeline of the national economy, it is imperative that essential infrastructure facilities are made available to the exporters,” said Mian Zahid Aslam, President of Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry in a statement.

He pointed out that Pakistan was losing textile export orders because of absence of international flights to and from Faisalabad as foreign buyers wanted to visit the city but were unable to do so. Instead, they go to Delhi, Mumbai or Singapore and ask Pakistani exporters to come to these places for finalising export orders.

According to Aslam, international flights are also necessary for textile export of fruits and vegetables from the region with time factor playing a key role in shipment of these perishable goods.

The Faisalabad Airport has been upgraded and infrastructure facilities have been provided by the business and trade circles. Direct Hajj flights from the city have also started. In the face of this, “it will not be difficult to start international flights for various destinations from the city,” Aslam stressed.

He said not only the passengers for Manchester and other destinations were sufficient enough from Faisalabad, but also the cargo shipments, which were being diverted to Lahore and other airports.

Faisalabad Airport to be upgraded by businessman

The Faisalabad Airport will be upgraded with the help of local businessmen on the pattern of Sialkot Airport, enabling the PIA and other airlines to start their international flights and provide cargo facilities to local exporters and importers. Talking to The News, Commissioner Syed Tahir Hussain said that appropriate arrangements for expansion of the airport with a huge cost of Rs 1,200 million would be made to ensure safe and efficient landing and parking of Boeing-777 and airbuses. He said that being a textile hub of the country, Faisalabad deserved adequate airport facilities commensurable with its status. The commissioner said that he had recently informed the representatives and office-bearers of various trade bodies, including the Faisalabad Chamber Of Commerce and Industries and Industry, All Pakistan Cloth Exporters Association, All Pakistan Textile Processing Mills Association, the Faisalabad Development Trust, Faisalabad Industrial Estate Development and Management Company, Anjuman-e-Tajran, the Civil Aviation, and other authorities concerned. He added that it was resolved in the meeting that the upgradation project should be taken up as early as possible.

He disclosed that industrialists and businessmen were of the view that a company should be constituted with 51 per cent controlling shares of the Civil Aviation Authority and 49 per cent shares of the local industrial and business community for efficient and effective operation of international flights from Faisalabad Airport and a comprehensive provision for timely lifting of air cargo.

The commissioner said that after long deliberations, it was decided that the industrialists and other participants of meeting should sit together and formulate viable proposals/suggestions for the uplift and development of the Faisalabad Airport and submit the proposals in 4-5 days so that these could be discussed in the next meeting.

The airport manager informed the meeting that presently single departure and arrival lounge was available for international and domestic operations at airport.

The parking is available for one airbus or two B-737s, while the required length of runway for boeing777 and a340 was lacking and similarly the parking bay for Boeing is inadequate, he added. He said that the PIA would enhance its international operation from Faisalabad Airport subject to renovation of the existing facilities and the cargo airlifting facilities would also be made available.

Pakistan international will be ok

I believe there is nothing to say about its appreciation but i would suggest it should be international in real as i don't think any international flights are flying from Multan. I think the reason being is there is no load of people flying to or from Multan. But being a city that is famous for mangoes specially and for it's sweet called sohan halwa there has need to make it international so that we could transport them easily without any hassle of sending them to big cities like lahore, islamabad or karachi. Finally i would like to say Multan is the biggest city in the southern Punjab. Surrounded by many well known cities like Bahawalpur, khanewal, muzafargarh,D.G khan and many others so taking all those cities into notice and looking at their population we should think there needs to have some real International Airport. So the people will not have to travel all the way to Lahore, islamabad or karachi and they will fly right from their neighbouring city.

Zooming in, I can see that this paved stretch clearly has runway markings and numbers (18/36), so I think it's in the correct location.

Thank you for the feedback. OurAirports is a community-maintained site, like Wikipedia, so we're always looking for better information. Do you happen to know the correct location for Okara Airport? Or is this one of the situations (common in some other countries) where a stretch of highway is designated as an emergency landing strip?
