We stayed overnight in the trailers that the Alaska Highway workers used. Rustic! The restaurant had closed for the evening, but the bartender said just go fix your own. We had steak, baked potato and apple pie. Left the money and did the dishes. Great way to live!

Is that another runway NW of the airport, or some kind of resource-based industry?

Not much here except a lodge and guide service - which is fine. Just a thrill for my first landing North of the Arctic Circle!

This is one of the most interesting places. Definitely worth the trip from Fairbanks to Barrow on a 737 Combi - the cargo and the passengers are together! A ceremonious crossing of the arctic circle by the pilot as well as a certificate from Alaska Airlines when you land!

It is very difficult to work with the Alaska Airlines customer service counter within the secured area. It's understaffed, usually with uninterested employees.

This airport has a nursery on the B concourse. It's a great little private room with two leather couches, a coffee table, a crib (bring your own sheet/blanket), rollercoaster beads, toddler-size chairs, and its own private bathroom. The only downfall is it doesn't have a monitor for arrivals/departures. Oh, and the room kind of stinks.

Departures are routinely delayed. Most aggravating.

this airport is currently undergoing a major remodel. perhaps with more gates, we'll have the opportunity for more flights at more convenient departure times.

TSA security is very thorough, but consistently very lenient in what you're allowed to bring. for instance, they allowed me to bring about 8 oz. of juice for my baby in her cup and plenty of other baby food/drink supplies.

Time to get through security is really fast and easy.

Expensive fuel, but great hamburgers at the restaurant. The restaurant has a phone and contact number for FSS on the field while you wait for your hamburger to be cooked.

Stay at the airplane for customs. You can get out, but don't leave the immediate vicinity of your airplane. They can get cranky about that.

Manley Hot Springs is at the end of the road and quite a trek from Fairbanks if driving, but only 38 minutes from Fairbanks by C-185. The Manley Roadhouse has great food and an interesting local clientele. Eat at the bar for maximum entertainment. Camping is available either at the airport (next to the Roadhouse) or at the Roadhouse.

The nearby hot spring is just a short walk away and only $5.00/hour per person for private use (no one else will use the facility when you do). The Roadhouse will have the info on the hot spring, which is at a private residence. If you fly north, Manley is a must see.

Reasonably priced airpark being developed here with fishing in nearby Silver Salmon Creek to the southeast. The airport is only a 30 minute drive to Homer.

Be aware of non-standard traffic patterns due to terrain and the frequent Part 135 operators who cut corners on the pattern and often do a dogleg straight-in to runway 16 from over the beach. Aircraft frequently takeoff and/or land downwind. Transient parking is anywhere there are no red cones at the tiedown ropes.
