That was when U.S. 40 was a 2-lane road. The Nut Tree was a "Destination" that boasted its own airport. Nowadays, the Nut Tree is just another shopping mall surrounded by suburbia and the drive from S.F. to Sacramento takes an hour and a half on I-80.
