I was just chatting with a friend who works for First Air up in Resolute. He was telling me that this past fall the CARS guy was wasted at work and they had to wake him up. Then later the same week the maintenance guy was suspended for driving drunk on the airstrip. He was telling me that first air had a bad crash there last year, a 737. Loss of life/aircraft. He said the guys were playing video games in the office when it happened. The weather was way off from what the guy was reporting then (the same guy who was drunk and had to be woken up before). Somebody has to stand up and do something about this kind of lawless operation in the north. It's aviation for x sakes, not a janitorial business. Transport should run these northern communities directly to ensure they are operated up to standard. How many people are going to die or risk their lives before something is done?
The north domestic airports are operated by the regional governments nowadays. The only good service I have seen is from 3 larger ones, and ATS (Hall Beech). Transport or Nav Canada sub contract the hell out of these airports. they get contracted again and again. THE LOCAL TOWN RUN ONES ARE THE WORST. HALF THE CARS STAFF HAVE LENGTHILY CRIMINAL RECORDS (I was informed of this once by the administrator for resolute a few years back). They had 3 criminals on staff and couldn't fire them. Two of them were repeat felons. ANY OTHER AIRPORTS IN THE WORLD WOULD HAVE SECURITY SCREENING FOR EMPLOYEES! Alcohol and drug use is so prevalent in the territory -our planes are basically used for trafficking -and a little bit of food or mail. I met a shady character once in YHK up from Montreal once who openly talked about the drug business up there. From crack to meth to marijuana and alcohol -he said it was the hottest spot right now for profits. He said they brought they made nearly half a million a month(!) of Chesterfield alone. He was saying how the weather guy was the key to the show there and other places. He would tell them what to do and how to not get caught or who to ship it to or how setup the shipments for the barge in summer. Chesterfield is rarely open as published, and when it is the guys on the operations end are completely clueless if you can understand them. I thought the radio operator was impaired when I called in here once. So we went to the office to check up on him. He was totally inebriated and had a 60 ouncer of Smirnoff right there on the desk.
One of the 3 acceptable operations in the north. (Iquialiut and Rankin Inlet are the other two)
*should read rwy 14/32
Borek is based in Calgary. The have an ops in iqualiut and resolute. Forget landing here in anything but a gentle breeze. Tight approach rwy 35 i think. RWY17 is for CAVOK and calm, daylight only. Takeoff is 17 only. The strip has some soft spots, a small wheeled plane could definitely end up in trouble here. I can't remember how long the strip is but less than 2000'. Seldom staffed. Drunk weather guy, drunk maintenance. Or if you are lucky they are all together absent. The most unreliable operation I have seen (possibly tied with Coral Harbor NWT or Iglooklik.) That is a place that I would be happy and relieved to here a VGM from! Pathetic operation it is.
Not a scenic place. Oddity of an airstrip too. Maintenance is good here, big strip (6000ft+) Somewhat of an ILS when it works. 2 NDBs. But same thing across the territory, unreliable service. The radio weather guy is usually high or drunk or having a social club in the weather office often stinks like booze or cannabis. You go in there and the guy gives you his whole life story. They aren't sure if they are CARS, FIC, or ATC. The zone is a bit confusing too, 25 mile control zone, but uncontrolled airspace. Same problem with maintenance on the runway as many northern strips. When I was there a few years back we had a near miss. I think they fired a guy over it and hired him back in another airfield. This one is staffed around the clock for weather; just go give the cars guy a nudge to wake up first. Nice to catch the news or some tunes on the mf though, its usually blasting in the background when you call up hhehe
The maintenance folk go on and off the strip whenever they feel like it. Radio man is clueless about it. I was taking off here once and just as I was turning at the button the truck casually meandered out on the runway. When he saw me (almost on top of the plane he darted back and forth like a deer in the lights kinda thing. I called up CARS and asked her to repeat the traffic. She said (cheerily) none to report. I said ok thanks, just checking...heh heh (shakes his head)
The weather guys here are clueless. Hard to get people to show up when you want them to, airport operation isn't what I would call 'safe'. Same all over Canada's north.

The runway 27 "restriction" is a voluntary turn northwards to reduce the noise signature on takeoff over a sensitive community, and as such pertains to takeoffs only. Since it is a RH circuit anyway, the procedure should have minimal impact for most users staying within the circuit. Landings on the recip heading ,rwy 09 are "as normal" as A/C are usually quieter on the approach.
The main application is towards the rather intense circuit activity when the flying school is in full operation with a strong west wind. Not ideal to be sure, but proposed additions to the airport infrastructure will require good relations with the neighbours for various approval processes. The "FBO" building housing the simulator is really a flying school facility, not directly owned by the airport owner. Hopefully a real "public terminal" will soon materialize on the west side and maybe even a runway extension to 14-32........a process dependent on those neighbourly relations that are the reason for the suggested dogleg departure.
Yes, the airport is improving, and I'd have to agree the community aspect of flying has suffered somewhat. The previous owners operated as a "family affair", great atmosphere, low prices, but hardly a change in 30 years. Now it's operated strictly as a business, and the airport business is a tough one. There are shortcomings to be sure, but at least CZBA has a future, unlike some nearby airports slated for closure or subject to the pressures of municipal councils pulling the purse strings ever tighter.

Well its official. The airport is to stop flight ops as of the end of May this year. Once again a pice of history lost. I have been there many times. I remember standing in hanger 4 that was empty and the roof leaking old equipment rusting in the back. And hearing the harvard fly over thinking this is a shame. Once those towers go up its gone forever. The Museum hopes to run still but i can't see it drawing a crowd with out aircraft too tie it all together. Anyone that has been there should show up for the open house in May it will be the last time we hear the roar of a harvard Departing Dunnville. PLease show you support and and give the field one last Buzz.

Good to hear about Ram Falls! Wondering if you, or anyone, has ever flown into the Shunda Airstrip (east of Nordegg) or the Brazeau Airstrip. straight north of there? I see they are abandoned but are they landable? Thx

I'd like to take my bike to a safe location to max out the speed, I figured a paved landing strip would be perfect. Any idea where I could go do this???
Dude your trying way!!! to hard. Just ask her yourself, save that for asking a girl to marry you.
Strip appeared to be clear of snow and grass covered on March 31st 2013. The surface was water on frozen turf. It was a long roll out in My Scout with Alaska Bush wheels. Shouldn't have been a surprise but it was. No problems out and agreat day. I was into the Ram Falls strip prior and it was dry.
I was wondering if there was any way someone could fly a banaster that would be asking a girl to prom? Please e mail me at guelph121@hotmail.com

This is going to be a very odd request, but I won't have an answer unless I ask. :)
Is it possible for a small plane to fly over a 1 acre property in Morriston just south of the 401, to drop small bags of candy for a child's birthday party? How much would it be?
Obviously the kids would be protected from any falling missiles once a specific time is arranged.
Thank you.
